Whether you are managing a grazing property, shire council lands or a national park or you are just interested in science in the Australian Alps, you should come along to Sharing the Knowledge: research from the Australian Alps. Today scientists from across the Alps will present their research on science in high places. Sharing the Knowledge is designed to communicate the results of recent research in the Australian Alps. The research is useful to all land managers and the results are applicable across the Alps.
The first Sharing the Knowledge will be held on Tuesday 14th November, 2000 at Snowy Region Visitor Centre Theatrette, Jindabyne and a second will follow in the Bright Chalet, Gavan Street, Bright on Thursday 16th November, 2000. Both sessions will start at 8.30am and continue till 4.30pm.
Speakers and topics include:
- Bob Britten, from NSW Dept. of Land and Water Conservation, on the Alpine Rehabilitation Manual;
- Nerida Davies from the Uni. of Canberra and CRC for Fresh Water Ecology will speak on Stream Health Monitoring;
- Kate McArthur from Victoria's Keith Turnbull Research Centre will describe English broom control in the Australian Alps;
- Andrew Murray from Victoria's Dept. Natural Resources and Environment will define the relationships between Fox/Dog Bait Stations and Spotted-tailed Quolls;
- Don Fletcher from Environment ACT will describe his research into Rabbits, RCD and Prey Switching in cooler climates;
- Jo Clarke from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will present an historic view of Science in High Places from the past to the present day;
- Michelle Walter will present the results of her doctoral study into the Population Ecology of Feral Horses in the Australian Alps;
- Dave Woods will illustrate the findings of research into the Effects of Fire on Flora and Fauna in the Australian Alps national parks in two separate presentations; and
- Peter Coyne from Environment Australia will describe his recent research into Protecting the Natural Treasures of the Australian Alps.
Brett McNamara, the Australian Alps Liaison Committee Program Coordinator, says, 'The Australian Alps Liaison Committee are proud to have been involved in all this primary research and are hoping that the findings help conservation land management across the length and breadth of the region. We are happy that we can undertake research that is so broadly applicable and practical.'
