Parks in the Alps
Eleven national parks and reserves in the Australian Alps cross State and Territory borders.
Stretching from Canberra through the Brindabella Range to the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales and along the Great Divide through eastern Victoria, Australia's alpine and subalpine environments are unique and special.
As a well-watered, snow-clad and mountainous area in a mostly dry and flat continent, the Australian Alps with 1.6 million hectares of protected areas are of great significance.
These parks and reserves are collectively known as the 'Australian Alps' national parks, a conservation zone of international significance. They have been inscribed on the National Heritage list and are also included as one of Australia's top 15 -20 tourism experiences as a National Landscape.
The Australian Alps National Parks have:
- Landscapes ranging from foothills and low plateaus of 300 - 900m to rolling summits, exposed ridgelines and rocky outcrops with the highest peaks above 1800m
- Plant species from across nearly all Australian plant families, most which have adapted to survive the harsh alpine conditions
- More than forty species of native mammals, two hundred bird species, thirty reptiles species, fifteen amphibians, fourteen native fish species and many species of invertebrates
- Indigenous sites that show evidence of occupation as far back as 21,000 years
- Creeks and streams that contribute to the catchments of South-Eastern Australia's main rivers
- A wide variety of facilities to ensure visitors enjoy their stay in the Parks.
